Melasyl™ for Skin Hyperpigmentation

Melasyl™ is a new molecule designed to help prevent the development of skin hyperpigmentation. It helps reduce the appearance of dark spots and improves skin evenness.

WHAT IS MELASYL™?

Melasyl™ is a new cosmetic active from the Thiopyridinone family, invented by L'Oréal to address hyperpigmentation issues, dyschromia and improve skin tone uniformity. This is the first molecule to capture melanin precursors before they become coloured pigments. Over the past 35 years, numerous studies have been carried out in vitro and then in vivo on humans by our researchers to assess the efficacy of different active ingredients. Melasyl™ is the result of rigorous tests involving high scientific expertise.

HOW DOES THIS INNOVATION WORK DIFFERENTLY?

{ "@context": "https://schema.org/", "@type": "WebPage", "speakable": { "@type": "SpeakableSpecification", "cssSelector": ["speakable-content"] }, "url": "https://www.loreal-paris-me.com/en/melasyl" }
Melasyl™ employs a distinct mechanism of action compared to other cosmetic ingredients that target pigmentation. By binding to melanin precursors, Melasyl™ inactivates them, preventing the excessive accumulation of melanin pigment in the skin. Unlike other agents that act on tyrosinase, Melasyl™ does not alter the natural biological pathways of skin pigment production, which are responsible for skin colour.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MELASYL™ FOR THE SKIN?

Our objective is always to enhance existing solutions. There is a need for more efficacious products that target localised and persistent excess melanin in order to achieve an even skin tone.
For L'Oréal, it is essential to respect the health of the skin and therefore its natural pigmentation process.
Melasyl™ intercepts melanin precursors before they accumulate in excess in the skin and create localised areas of hyperpigmentation. Unlike other molecules, the Melasyl™ molecule does not function as a tyrosinase inhibitor involved in melanin biosynthesis. Rather, it respects the essential skin color production process by reducing the amount of melanin product without blocking it completely.

WHICH FORM OF MELASYL™ SHOULD I USE?

To maximise its anti- and depigmenting effects, Melasyl™ can be used at a concentration of 0.5% in combination with other active ingredients that target complementary mechanisms involved in the onset and establishment of localised hyperpigmentation. This breakthrough innovation from L’Oréal is the principal active ingredient in a new state-of-the-art serum, dermatologically tested: Glycolic Bright Anti-Dark Spot Brightening Serum.

HAS MELASYL™ BEEN TESTED ON ANIMALS?

No, Melasyl™ was not tested on animals either during its discovery or development. L'Oréal does not test any of its ingredients or products on animals and is committed to animal-test-free beauty.

CAN MELASYL™ BE USED BY PREGNANT WOMEN?

For pregnant women, L'Oréal follows a specific formulation charter and special safety assessment strategies. Since Melasyl™ has not been formulated neither tested on pregnant women we are not recommending using Melasyl™ containing product for this population unless advised by a doctor.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIAMIDOL AND MELASYL™?

Thiamidol is a Beiersdorf-patented resorcinol derivative with a classic mechanism of action: It inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of melanin precursors, acting upstream of Melasyl™ to block the natural biological process of melanin precursor production. Unlike Melasyl™, which intercepts melanin precursors before they accumulate in excess in the skin and create localised areas of hyperpigmentation.

HOW WAS MELASYL™ DISCOVERED BY L’OREAL R&I?

Resulting from a vast research programme aimed at improving hyperpigmentation solutions, the story of Melasyl™ began 18 years ago with the screening of molecules active in pigmentation. Around 100,000 molecules were tested to evaluate their impact on melanin production. In 2015, several of them were selected for their safety to human and environmental health. Following these tests, researchers found that Melasyl™ provided the fastest clinical results for skin brightening.
